Last night, legendary singer Mavis Staples performed a powerful new song called “Build A Bridge” live on the Late Show With Stephen Colbert.
The track is from Mavis’ forthcoming album If All I Was Was Black, which Billboard calls “a reminder of her timeless talent -- and the work that still needs to be done to build relationships with our fellow man.”

The album arrives in stores this November 17th and was produced by Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy, who joined Mavis on stage for the television performance. It is the third collaboration between Mavis and Jeff Tweedy. Their first, 2010’s You Are Not Alone, won a Grammy Award for Best Americana album. Their second, One True Vine, was a Grammy nominee. But If All I Was Was Black marks the first time Tweedy has composed an entire album of original songs for Mavis' legendary voice and a nation she's uniquely poised to address.
